Founder’s Day Celebration a Success

Members of the alumni, active chapter and Sphinx pledges gathered at the Abruzzi Club on Saturday February 27th for an evening of reliving Sphinx traditions, card games and bocce.  More than 15 alumni were present for the event which lasted well into the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The highlight of the night was when the pledges, actives, and alumni sang the fraternity song,” said Kyle Yaggi ’05.  “There’s something so unifying about everyone, regardless of age and graduating class, knowing the words to the song and being together again as a part of something larger.”

For Jason Graham ’07, a music education teacher in Troy, Ohio, one of the highlights of the evening included Benjamin Garnett ’06, ensuring the 10 current pledges knew their pledge responses.  Several alumni commented that it was nice to see the progression of their family tree.

The actives and alumni squared off in several bocce ball games and nine alumni participated in a $10 per seat poker game. The pot went to Kayne Kirby ’02 while Scott Humphrey ’91 finished second.

The Founder’s Day Event, which commemorates the date when Sphinx held its very first meeting back on February 28, 1919, is held every year.  If you couldn’t make it this year, we hope to see you next year.

The start of the fall 2009 semester meant new beginnings for the active chapter and the designation as the largest active fraternity on the Otterbein College campus. Traditionally Sphinx has reported higher membership numbers but has not held the designation as the largest fraternity on campus since the fraternities refounding. Members of the active chapter hope to build the brotherhood with a strong showing during recruitment this winter. The fraternity will graduate five seniors in 201
