Sigma Delta Phi Fraternity, commonly known as Sphinx, was founded in 1919 at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. Sigma Delta Phi has a long tradition of excellence on campus, attracting student leaders from all disciplines, from athletes to musicians. Sphinx has produced many distinguished Alumni, representing many professions, including business leaders, doctors, military officers, clergymen, attorneys and teachers.
Sphinxmen pride themselves on their tight-knit brotherhood and their strong foundation of community service, including participation in service projects for groups such as The Columbus AIDS Walk, Save Darfur, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and many others.
Sigma Delta Phi has been awarded “Chapter of the Year” among all fraternities at Otterbein, three consecutive years and running, for 2007, 2008 and 2009. Sphinx has consistently maintained the highest average GPA among fraternities, a score that is also significantly higher than the all-campus average. During Greek Week, Sphinx usually finishes near the top, anchored by the Float Competition and Harmony Night, which Sphinx has won more than any other Greek organization
Sphinx Fraternity encourages young men of all backgrounds to explore the brotherhood and diversity that is not available in all organizations. Members are free to be themselves without question or reservation. This acceptance is what makes Sphinx appealing to a wide diversity of men at Otterbein.
Active membership recruitment is in the Fall and Winter quarters, starting with the “Big Kahuna” Rush Party and the Final Dinner, and ending with Pledging and “The Land”.
